THE Philippine National Police (PNP) today warned the public from dealing with scammers who could be using the names of popular personalities, including political candidates, to dupe them of their hard-earned money.

We remind the public to be vigilant against people who may use personalities, even politicians, when asking for favors or money,” PNP Chief, Police General Guillermo Eleazar said, who also instructed police units to keep an eye out for this particular modus.

He issued the warning after the Caloocan City Police arrested last Friday (November 5) five persons in Camarin, Caloocan City for allegedly selling daily time records for P30 each to residents who would supposedly receive cash from Senator Manny Pacquiao for cleaning the community.

The suspects claimed they were members of Senator Pacquiao’s staff and were ordered to recruit cleaners who would be given P7,500. However, Senator Pacquiao has denied any involvement in the scheme of some individuals or groups distributing cash or soliciting money using his name.

PGen Eleazar said that aside from Senator Pacquiao, there were also other political personalities who fell prey to the modus operandi of other criminal elements in order to dupe people of their money.

There are many criminal elements who will take advantage of the need and desperation of other people just to earn money,” the Chief PNP said.

He pointed out that the usual modus is to use the name of personalities to gaint the trust of would-be victims, with the promise of a huge return in their investment or even easy instant money.

PGen Eleazar urged the public to immediately report to authorities if they fall victim to scammers involved in this kind of modus or any other scam.
