THE Philippine National Police (PNP) said it is now reviewing the Memorandum of Agreement drafted by the Department of Justice (DOJ) concerning the joint investigation of the police and the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) on anti-illegal drugs operations that resulted in deaths.
The DOJ earlier said that it already finished the draft and forwarded a copy of it to the two law enforcement agencies on October 15.
“The MOA draft review is already being finalized and after that, a formal signing of the MOA will be done so that the review and case build-up against police who may have abused their authority in our aggressive campaign against illegal drugs for the past five years,” said PGen Eleazar.
“This serves as an assurance to our kababayan that we are serious in our commitment to ferret out the truth on the questionable cases, to hold accountable those who committed abuses and to institutionalize reforms to further professionalize your PNP,” he added..
The DOJ had finished assessing 52 cases involving more than 150 policemen after the PNP submitted case folders of questionable police operations during anti-illegal drugs operations since July 2016.
PGen Eleazar assured that the move is part of the effort of the PNP to strengthen transparency and accountability amid allegations of human rights abuses and extra-judicial killings in the conduct of anti-illegal drugs operations.
President Rodrigo Duterte himself said that those who committed abuses will be sanctioned. The national government said the findings of the DOJ’s review would be made public.
“In partnership with the NBI, we will right what was wrong and we will hold responsible those who committed wrongdoings in the interest of truth and justice,” said PGen Eleazar.
