THE President of Taiwan said that the Taiwanese won’t bow to pressure from China.

The strong stand by Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen came a day after Chinese leader Xi Jinping again promised a “peaceful reunification” with Taiwan as part of “one China.”

However, Tsai is still hopeful that tensions will ease up across the Taiwan Strait, she said during a rally that marked Taiwan’s National Day.

She vowed her people will not bow down to pressure from China as the island-nation continues to fortify its defenses, as Beijing continues to step up military and political pressure to accept mainland China’s rule.

Just recently, China conducted several air force missions with over a hundred planes flying near the island, forcing Taiwan to react by scrambling its own fighter jets.

“We will not act rashly but there should be absolutely no illusions that the Taiwanese people will bow to pressure,” President Tsai said.

Taiwan is currently undertaking a military modernization program to bolster its defenses, including building its own submarines.
